Registration
Whitecliff Seniors Residence in White Rock hosted the starting place. They gave us space for registration and put out a super breakfast. Thanks so much Ken Kantman and Whitecliff staff. Cyclist comment on the highlights of the day, "So well organized. Gogos should take on world peace!"
The first leg and rest stop at 25km.
Langley Gogos hosted the first rest stop on a quiet country road in a beautiful garden. The cyclists are pumped!
Lunch Break at 50km.
Abbotsford Gogos catered the lunch break at Blacktail Picnic Shelter in Aldergrove Park. Cyclist comments on the highlights of the day:
- "Wraps with actual real fresh veggies! Cookies!"
- "Chatting with everyone. Being so happy. Being greeted by each cheering brigade of grandmothers and grandothers as if I were a star athlete setting new records."
Rest stop at 75km.
Cyclists were treated to an ice cream cone at Birchwood Dairy. The favourite seemed to be "Coffee Crunch." YUM!
The finish line at Yarrow Community School
- Would I ride again next year????? BRING IT ON!!
- As I pedalled along one refrain, from Shakira’s "Waka Waka" kept spinning through my mind: “this time for Africa.” So I especially want to acknowledge the African grandmothers we serve. They never asked for the task, but their will to rise to incredible challenges inspires us to broaden our horizons in small ways we might never have anticipated. As great as it felt to break the 100k barrier on a ride, really, compared to what they face every day . . .it was a challenge I gladly accept.
Dinner at Yarrow Community School hosted by Chilliwacky Gogos
Cyclists' comments on the highlights,
- "I loved seeing how many grandmothers and grand-others worked together to make it happen, and to make a difference."
- "I thought the tablecloths were beautiful and the chilli was very delicious"
- "Can we have the chilli recipe please?"
- "I had many special days in 2017 and participating in Solidarity Cycle was one of the best."
Reflections on the day...Our cyclists said...
The supports for the riders were superlative.
The enthusiasm of the cheering squads lifted my spirits all the way.
The first rest stop had the most welcome watermelon.
Lunch was great, especially the juicy ripe plums. The Aldergrove Park site was so beautiful.
I rarely eat ice cream, but I fear I may have a new addiction!
And the finish line - a truly grand finale!
Dinner was especially good for the freshly picked corn. It was so lovely to enjoy after riding by miles and miles of cornfields in the valley.
